Scott Serfas is one photographer who likes to get in on the action. In fact, he thrives on it. There is a certain amount of serendipity involved, but there is also a certain amount of passive control, in the sense that Serfas knows what to expect and expects the unexpected.

Every month, Shutterbug columnist Joe Farace chooses his favorite photography websites and online photo portfolios from readers. Here are four photo sites he thinks are a cut above.

Last year, as a freshman, Amanda Haycook found herself taking pictures of buildings. “It wasn’t a conscious decision at first,” she says, “it was just like my eye kept going there.” Not so with others on the streets: “Living in New York I noticed that people don’t look up, and I just started noticing things that people weren’t paying attention to.”

Social documentary photographer Larry Fink, who’s well known for his striking black-and-white images of high society and the down-and-out, was honored at the 2015 Infinity Awards gala at the International Center for Photography a few months ago. In attendance at this sumptuous event were celebrities including the model Naomi Campbell, the actor Alan Rickman and photographers Steve McCurry, Susan Meiselas, Sylvia Plachy and others.

You don’t start off talking about photography when you talk to Paul Edmondson about how he creates his striking fine art landscape images. You talk about what he notices and what he chooses from all that the landscape offers. 

Photographer and writer, Jaymi Heimbuch has a profound interest in wildlife and nature. Her goal is to create images that trigger an emotional connection with viewers, and which spur us all to be stewards of nature. Through her work, Heimbuch hopes to spark wonder, respect and appreciation for animals.
