Ever since Nikon recently announced an “extraordinary” financial loss and cancelled the long-awaited DL Series of premium compact cameras, there have been concerns about the health and future direction of the legendary imaging company. In an attempt to ease concerns, Nikon executives have revealed the company’s strategy for the future in an interview just published by several Japanese news outlets.

According to a translation by Nikon Rumors, the venerable brand is undergoing an aggressive restructuring that will result in a sharp focus on high- and mid-range DSLRs and lenses, as well as a more ambitious approach to the mirrorless camera category. Part of the strategy is to concentrate resources on fewer models, with the possibility of still developing high-end compact cameras in the future.

Most industry analysts consider these developments a positive sign as Nikon prepares to celebrate its 100th Anniversary in July.
