Why This Top Pro Sold All His Beloved Nikon Gear & What He Plans to Buy Next (VIDEO)

OK, we know this one is going to be controversial, but when pro Matt Granger speaks, people listen because he’s been a top pro for many years. And for someone known as “the Nikon Guy” for the past 15 years, a decision to sell all his high-end gear and move to another system is a really big deal.

To be clear, in the below video Granger speaks highly of Nikon equipment, and says it’s still a great choice for other serious photographers, but “it’s no longer the best choice for me.” And he’s gracious enough to include criticism and negative comments in the video, ragging on him for defecting.

With many photographers considering a switch from DSLRs to mirrorless cameras, Granger’s conundrum shouldn’t be too surprising. Another consideration is that his shooting style has evolved, with a greater emphasis on video. Nonetheless, he put considerable thought into switching systems, before bidding Nikon a bittersweet farewell.

While explaining the reasons for his decision, Granger describes his longtime affair with Nikon cameras, lenses, and accessories, and the cameras he owned—everything from the D200 in the early days to his last Nikon DSLR, the “masterpiece D850.” He also notes that a switch in systems needn’t be exorbitantly expensive, if you get a good price for your old stuff, and buy your next system used.

So what’s next for Granger? That’s also interesting because he’s tested a number of cameras from Canon, Sony, and Panasonic, but he’s yet to pull the trigger.

It’s a fascinating discussion that’s well-worth watching, because you might find yourself at a similar crossroads in the future. There’s much more worth watching on Granger’s YouTube channel, and speaking of the trend toward mirrorless cameras, check out our recent review of Canon’s new full-frame mirrorless EOS R5.
