There’s more to black-and-white photography than simply a lack of color. Maybe we wouldn’t feel this way if the first photographs were made in color but that didn’t happen and I grew up admiring the works of W. Eugene Smith and other photojournalists who photographed people at work, play, or being themselves in glorious black and white.

Adobe has released version 14 of Photoshop Elements and Premier Elements. Both are exciting and easy-to-use, and offer enough editing horsepower for most photo and video enthusiasts. Although Premier 14 is chock full of improvements, including some cool new things you can do with 4K video, I found the enhancements in Photoshop Elements to be more groundbreaking and fun. So that’s what we’ll focus on today.

Anthropics Technology Ltd recently launched PortraitPro v15—a major release of its fast and easy-to-use pro portrait retouching software. PortraitPro 15 offers a wide variety of new features (many requested by photographers) including: realistic makeup controls, wide angle (selfie) lens distortion correction, enhanced Child mode, advanced skin coloring and tone correction, improved feature detection, and support for ultra-high resolution displays. When we first told you about Affinity Photo back in February, the software’s parent company, Serif, had launched a free beta version of the app that garnered tons of attention from photographers seeking to leave the subscription-based Photoshop CC behind. That beta has ended and now a final version of Affinity Photo is available for Mac computers.
