In this and a continuing series of articles in the coming months we’ll bring you the news and innovations from the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held earlier this year in Las Vegas. While the show floor was dominated by “smart” this and that, from phones to TVs and tablets, we’ll concentrate on those items of most interest to photographers. This report is on the new and recently introduced D-SLRs and interchangeable lens mirrorless cameras.

If you're unfamiliar with an in-camera technique known as "Expose to the Right" (ETTR) this tutorial explains the concept and demonstrates how one of our favorite pros uses it to nail exposure every time and get the best possible image quality out of every shot. The pro hack takes less that nine minutes to explain, and it will prove invaluable for every image you shoot in the great outdoors.

Here’s a quick camera tip from travel photographer Pierre T. Lambert that’s worth trying out. It often seems like we’re all addicted to reviewing our images on the back screen right after we take them. And, in fact, there’s a camera setting that lets you immediately review the shots for a few seconds on the LCD display on back. (Most of you probably have it on.)

Photographers tend to be very serious about eliminating (or at least reducing) noise in their photographs. These ugly digital artifacts tend to show up as distracting specs of grain, or random variations in color and brightness in areas of an image than should appear clean. 

If you're like most outdoor photographers you often shoot in dirty environments in which dust can enter your camera and wreak havoc on the sensor, especially on windy days. And every time you switch lenses the odds of contamination will increase.

Samsung has just launched a smaller and lighter version of its flagship NX1 mirrorless camera: the highly portable NX500. This little camera, which comes in black, brown, and white versions, uses the same 28MP BSI APS-C sensor that’s in the NX1 along with several other features including 4K and UHD video shooting, the DRIMeV image processor, NX AF system III, and Samsung Auto Shot.
