Mattias Burling has a bone to pick with some of those negative 6D Mark II reviews, saying he actually thinks it’s a great full frame camera.

Finding an inexpensive full frame camera is difficult these days. And with Nikon set to release a new mirrorless full frame camera this month, things aren’t likely to get any cheaper.

For me, the Mark II designation forever conjures up images of the classic Jaguar Mark 2 automobile, but this new Pentax DSLR may change my mind. When testing the original Pentax K-1 for Shutterbug I was impressed by its outstanding construction and image quality. That thing was built like a tank with styling reminiscent of the classic medium format Pentax 67.

Ask just about any professional photographer what the top cameras are for capturing sports, photojournalism or wildlife and they’ll likely tell you the Nikon D5, Canon 1D X Mark II or the Sony A9. These full-frame cameras are truly the cream of the crop when it comes to capturing high-quality images of fast action.

If you’re considering buying a high-resolution full-frame camera, you’ve likely considered both the Nikon D850 DSLR or the Sony A7R III mirrorless camera.

Three of the most talked about full-frame, interchangeable lens cameras of the past year, undoubtedly, have to be the Sony A7R III and A7 III mirrorless cameras, and the Nikon D850 DSLR. While we’ve reviewed all three models at Shutterbug, we haven’t done a direct head-to-head comparison of them.

The Nikon D850 has certainly earned its fair share of accolades since it was launched in August 2017. We named it our favorite camera of 2017, and it also made the Technical Press Association International’s (TIPA) list as the Best Pro DSLR of 2018. Now two photographers and prominent YouTube personalities say the Nikon D850 could be the best camera of all time.

The Canon EOS Rebel SL2 is a small and lightweight entry-level DSLR: 4.82x3.65x2.75 inches in size and weighing in at 16 ounces without the lens (including the battery and memory card). The SL2 features a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and a vari-angle touchscreen three-inch LCD. It also sports Dual Pixel CMOS AF with phase detection and has a low-pass filter.

The year is 2068 and the Dystopian Party has defeated the less conservative Cacotopian Caucus and all Americans are now permitted to own one and only one camera. You have five minutes to choose your system. When time is up, all of the gear you own that is not directly useable by your choice—and all of your other cameras—will be tossed straight into a cosmic wood chipper and shredded into impalpable dust. Which camera do you pick?

Shutterbug, a member of the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA), once again joined forces with 30 other member magazines from around the world to choose the winners of the annual TIPA Awards for the best photo/imaging products in 40 different categories. The award process began in early 2017 with an initial selection of a wide range of products conducted by TIPA’s Technical Committee, on which Shutterbug’s Editor-at-Large George Schaub serves.

The 45.7-megapixel D850 is Nikon’s first DSLR with an FX-format (aka full frame), backside-illuminated CMOS sensor with no low-pass filter, which is designed to shoot high-quality images and video even in low light. The D850 can capture 4K UHD at 24/30 frames per second (fps) that’s output at a full-frame width of 16:9, allowing widescreen 4K clips at a true field of view.

When I checked Canon’s website to verify the specs on the EOS 6D Mark II ($1,999, body only; $3,099, for the test camera supplied with the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM “kit” lens) I was a bit surprised to see it termed a “gateway” for enthusiasts to step up to a full-frame DSLR. That’s a new one to me, but that indeed is what this camera is.

Another year has come and gone, which means it’s time for Shutterbug to once again pick our favorite cameras and lenses of the past 12 months. With so much great photo gear to choose from in 2017, it was a difficult task. The below list though is a good summation of the cameras and lenses Shutterbug’s editors and writers most enjoyed shooting with last year.

One key task when reviewing a new camera is to answer the important question “Who’s it for?” This challenge is a bit more difficult than usual with Nikon’s new Nikon D850 DSLR, because this powerful camera is one that defies classification.
