Not one to shy away from special-edition models, Leica recently introduced the M-P “Grip,” a $15,000 “irresistible work of art” designed in collaboration with Rolf Sachs that’s essentially a Leica-MP mirrorless digital camera (with a very nice Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH lens). But if you can’t afford this masterpiece because you’re bidding on the Ansel Adams Arca Swiss 4x5 that’s up for auction, there’s always this silver metallic Leica M3 candy-tin replica (above right) for $40.

Their combined expertise will be used to expand on the already successful Tamarkin Photographica—a rare camera auction business started by Stan in 1996. Stan and Dean will remain committed to providing personal service, appraisals and guidance to both sellers and buyers of their investment quality offerings.

Tamarkin & Bertoldi Vintage Auctions held their 29th rare camera auction last weekend which was held over two days. There were 549 lots offered and included vintage camera gear from Leica, Rolleiflex, Nikon rangefinder, and other famous marques.

Featured in the auction was a like new black enamel Leica M2 that sold for over $39,000 (including buyer’s fee), a 15mm Hologon f8 lens that was hammered down for over $15,000, and a 1937 Leica 250 GG Reporter for $6,000. Another extremely interesting sale was the mounted Minox Sales Display from the 1960s that sold for over $3,700.

Tamarkin Photographica will hold its seventeenth rare camera auction in New
York City on June 3, 2005. There will be over 250 lots of rare and unusual photo
gear including a 1000mm Nikkor f6,3 for the Nikon rangefinder that will have
an estimate of over $45,000, a chrome Leica MP, Leica A Elmax, Leica 250 GG,
a beautiful black Nikon S3, and an exceedingly rare black Nikkor J camera.

Their next rare camera auction will be February 20, 2011 in Woodbridge, Connecticut. Featured items will be a Leica B Dial Set Compur, Leica 250 Reporter, black Leica M3, a black Nikon SP, an unused black Leica M2 in the box, a black Summarex, and many other rare and unusual pieces.

If you’ve ever been to the Land of the Rising Sun and attempted to take mass transportation around 1800 hours (6pm) you know what I mean. Hand-to-hand combat is easier, but probably no harder than trying to find a niche for a new product in this overpopulated photo accessory category.
