Take a Magical Night Flight from the Cockpit of a Plane in This Time-Lapse of the Milky Way By Pilot Sam Wick

Sam Wick is a long-haul pilot flying for the Zurich-based airline Swiss, and he captured the spectacular video below from the cockpit during a recent flight across the Atlantic to South America.

During the evening flight with 340 passengers aboard, Wick guided his plane past the Alps, over Geneva and the tip of Switzerland before banking left past the Rhone Valley and the Mediterranean. The route then passed by the vast Sahara, and Senegal before heading out over the Atlantic toward Sao Paolo.

Wicks says something incredible happened after passing Algeria: “Just as the bright city lights are vanishing behind us, the Milky Way starts to become clearly visible up ahead. It’s now us, pacing at almost the speed of sound along the invisible highway and the pitch-black night sky above this surreal landscape.”

Watch this amazing video, shooting stars and all, and see for yourself. And don’t miss our earlier story about a pilot who captured spectacular images from the cockpit of a Boeing 747.
