One the most fun things I’ve ever done was to photograph the 24 Hours of Le Mans car race in France. Of course, I was shooting it as an amateur with very limited access to the track, the cars, and the pits. And I did go back to the hotel to catch a little sleep at one point. (But it was still fun nonetheless and I got some great shots.)

The word boudoir comes from late 18th century French, meaning “sulking place.” To the eye, and in the mind, of boudoir photographer Jen Rozenbaum, it is anything but.

We’ve featured several “toy photographers” on Shutterbug.com before and the amazing scenes they create with action figures and a little creative ingenuity never ceases to amaze. Los Angeles-based Mitchel Wu is one such photographer.

Inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s quote, “I don’t mind living in a man’s world, as long as I can be a woman in it,” photographer Mandira Bahl set off in early 2017 to document the lives and rides of Sirens MC, New York City’s oldest and largest women’s biker group. We recently caught up with Bahl to find out more about the project and how she became interested in telling the story of these “Tough Beauties.”

Nicolas Bruno was 15 years old when everything changed. His restful sleep became something very different, something called sleep paralysis. Conscious, his eyes open, he was unable to move, unable to stop the terrifying dreams and hallucinations in which he was pursued and tormented.

“Every Picture Tells a Story.” You’ve no doubt heard Rod Stewart’s song, but, as you head out the door with your camera, do you ever stop to mull over what these words mean? What, you ask yourself, am I saying with each frame? Do I need to shoot more frames to fashion the message I want the world to see and hear? And finally, you may be asking yourself, do I need to bathe the pictures in a wash of words or should I let them speak for themselves?

“I really do not consider myself to be a storyteller,” Jay Maisel says. “Pictures are basically anecdotal anyway.” In his studio full of artifacts and mounted photos from his travels around the world, Maisel is happy to reflect on his 63 years of personal and commercial photography work.

Today is National Puppy Day; an annual celebration founded in 2006 by Colleen Paige, who says, “Puppies are the most trusting and joyous creatures on the planet.” To help celebrate the occasion, we thought we’d bring you the following short film, with a day in the life of pet photographer extraordinaire Elias Weiss Freidman.

I was pretty sure I wanted to talk with Eric Ward when I saw his iPhone pictures at various sites around the Web. I was absolutely sure when I read, at one of those sites, his best photography secret: “Perspective. I’m 6’4” and I see the world differently than my 3 year-old. Change your perspective while shooting a scene and you’ll find a whole new scene to shoot.”

Today marks the 116th birthday of Ansel Adams (February 20, 1902-April 22, 1984), a passionate environmentalist and one of the most iconic image-makers of our time. Were he alive today, Adams would no doubt be somewhere in Yosemite Valley, and he’d likely be pioneering new forms of photography—perhaps in the digital darkroom.

Shooting something like rocket launches takes a whole lot of planning and talent no doubt, and this wasn’t Brady Kenniston’s first experience in the trade.

We recently shared a fascinating video from Romanian pro Toma Bonciu, in which he discussed how much he’s learned by studying the work of fine art landscape photographer Clyde Butcher. And in today’s revealing video, the self-taught Bonciu explains how much his photography has evolved after scrutinizing the images of the iconic Art Wolfe.

Without a camera in his hand, Josiah Launstein looks like any other 13-year-old. But while boys his age are watching video games, cruising around on skateboards, or trying to impress girls, this talented kid is out in the field shooting truly epic wildlife photos.

Albert Normandin has photographed in Myanmar on 13 visits over 12 years. He estimates he’s spent over 600 days in the country. He won’t guess at how many photos he’s taken. This one, though, has somewhat special significance.

If you want to make photographs with impact, it’s important that they tell a story, and “speak” to the viewer. No matter how beautiful an image appears, if it doesn’t provoke an emotional response, you haven’t quite finished the job.
