Zeiss made a big splash at the photokina show in Cologne, Germany last month when it announced the Zeiss ZX1, a compact camera with a Zeiss-designed, 37.4MP full-frame sensor. Today at the PhotoPlus Expo show in New York City, Zeiss officially took the wraps off the camera by displaying prototypes of the ZX1 for the first time.

Photokina in Cologne, Germany this week has been (largely) about high-end cameras and there’s not much higher-end than what Leica unveiled at the show: the S3 camera. We got some hands-one time with this 64MP medium format monster at photokina and have to say that if there’s one camera we dream about owning someday, this would be it!

Panasonic said at the photokina show in Germany today that it has developed two full frame mirrorless cameras: the 47MP S1R and the 24MP S1. According to Panasonic, these models are equipped with the “world's first: 4K 60p/50p video recording function and the Dual I.S. image stabilization system."

Fujifilm is trying to prove that big cameras can come in small packages. At the photokina show in Cologne, Germany today, Fujifilm announced the GFX 50R, a 51.4MP medium format digital camera in a relatively compact rangefinder-style mirrorless camera body. The GFX 50R is the followup to Fuji’s GFX 50S, https://www.shutterbug.com/content/hands-impressions-new-fujifilm-gfx-medium-format-mirrorless-camera which was announced at the last photokina show in 2016.

Ricoh’s powerful GR series compact digital cameras have always had a cult following among travel photographers and street shooters who appreciate pocketable cameras with high-end optics, relatively large sensors, great build quality, and a full range of manual controls. The excitement is sure to grow, with today’s Photokina announcement of the Ricoh GR III, the latest model in the line.

The Photokina news keeps coming, as Sigma just introduced five new Global Vision lenses for shooting everything from landscapes and street photography to portraits and sports. The new glass includes a 28mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art, 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art, 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary, 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports, and the 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports.

Leica, Panasonic and Sigma announced today at the photokina show in Germany that they are forming the “L-Mount Alliance” to try to create a new lens mount standard for full frame mirrorless cameras.

The recent CES show in Las Vegas saw the debut of the Panasonic GH5S, a mirrorless camera designed specifically to shoot in low light conditions.
