Back in the early days of digital photography, a popular topic of discussion was the differences in image quality between film cameras and digital models. With that concern now settled, the issue of the day is an ongoing debate regarding the relative merits of full-frame vs. digital cameras.

Most photographers love upgrading their gear, especially when the purchase is a new camera. The temptation is to charge the battery, mount a lens, and head out the door for a test spin, but there are a few things you should do first if you want to take advantage of everything your new toy can do.

Fujifilm was showing off its new toys at photokina today and we got some hands-on time with these latest X-series cameras and lenses. Initially announced on September 10th, the Fujifilm X100T and XT-1 Graphite Silver cameras, and Fujinon XF50-140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR and XF56mm F1.2 R APD lenses continue to build on Fuji’s compact and retro-style (Fuji would say “classic" style) X-Series line.

Hasselblad introduced its latest mirrorless medium format camera this morning, the 50-megapixel X1D II 50C, which is the follow-up to the X1D from a few years ago. After this morning's launch, we got some hands-on time with an early, pre-production version of the X1D II 50C at a special press event at Hasselblad's NY Experience Studio.

The Hasselblad 907X 50C camera is so different from the sorts of cameras most of us shoot with, I feel like I almost need a new vocabulary to describe it. If a visitor from Area 51 handed me the device used on their planet to take pictures, I’d expect it to strongly resemble this ‘blad. It is at once familiar and yet radically different. Using it made me feel like I was at Disney’s World of Tomorrow exhibit, sampling the future and finding it surprisingly intuitive.

Shutterbug was at Sony’s USA headquarters in San Diego, CA last week for the launch of the A6400 mirrorless camera, which features a 24.2MP APS-C Exmor image sensor and Sony’s latest BIONZ X image processor. Sony claims that the A6400, which is designed for photo enthusiasts and those moving up from smartphone cameras, has “the world’s fastest autofocus” at 0.02 seconds for AF acquisition.

Sony launched the 42.4MP A7R III yesterday and Shutterbug was amongst a group of select media that got a chance to shoot with this new, full frame mirrorless camera at a studio shoot with dancers and performers, and then later at a nightclub with musicians.

The new Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II is designed to hold up to inclement weather and boy did we put it to the test! During a press trip to Iceland last week, we adhered to the mailman’s creed while using Olympus’ new flagship mirrorless camera, shooting with it in rain, hail, sleet, snow and gloom of night (along with some sunshine) in this rugged but beautiful Nordic island country.

It's sort of surprising that more photographers don't avail themselves of the all-important histogram when shooting and editing their work. One of our favorite landscape shooters puts it like this: "Understanding the histogram is key to mastering exposure and taking control of your photography."

If you're considering making the switch from a crop-sensor camera to full-frame model we urge you carefully consider the key points of today's tutorial before pulling the trigger—especially if you're motivated by achieving images with less noise while shooting under low light with high ISO settings. That's because despite conventional wisdom the determining factors are more involved than you think.
