The Story Behind the Image: The Skye’s the Limit in This Epic Shot of Scotland by Onur Cepheli

The Isle of Skye in Scotland is the kind of place where it’s not hard to get decent landscape photos with little effort. It really is that beautiful. But to shoot something truly spectacular you have to wake up early and do some serious planning.

That’s what Onur Cepheli learned when he captured this image of the Quiraing on Skye a few years ago.

“My wife and I woke up around 2 a.m. to get to the viewpoint on time,” he recalls. “Some of the roads were so narrow that they only allowed one vehicle to pass at a time. We parked around 3:30 a.m. and hiked around half an hour to get to this magical spot to take this photograph. Nevertheless, this particular sunrise was very impressive.”

Indeed it was.

He captured the image with a Nikon D800 and a 16-35mm f/4 lens at 32mm, ISO 100, f/11. Cepheli highly recommends visiting the Isle of Skye to any travel or landscape photographer.

“There was a lot of hiking involved in that trip, so it was physically demanding but we saw so many marvelous landscapes on the island. It was totally worth the effort!”
