The Road to Great Photos Is Paved with Mistakes, so Keep Shooting “Even If You Suck” (VIDEO)

After speaking with many great photographers throughout the years, we’ve detected a common refrain: Their paths to creative artistry were paved with good intentions, frequent self-doubt, and countless mistakes. But as you’ll see in the three-minute video below, the trick is to keep shooting, even if you’re disappointed with your images

This isn’t a tutorial about composition and exposure techniques, or simple photo hacks to boost creativity. Rather, it’s a revealing look at what professional photographer Peter McKinnon learned after befriending young lettering artist Stefan Kunz. McKinnon not only picked up valuable philosophical wisdom from the young artist, but ultimately let Kunz draw several signs on the walls of his home.

While some photographers are frustrated because they still have so much to learn, others are actually quite proficient, but allow a penchant for perfection cloud their self worth. Regardless of which characterization best describes you; this quick video will make you realize that perseverance pays off, even if it’s days, months, or years down the road.

There are two important takeaways here: First, it’s important to allow yourself to fail, and secondly, it’s always worth your while to shoot photos—even if you don’t like the results. So challenge yourself to create at least one image every day, even if it sucks!
