During a trip to Grand Teton National Park one September, while photographing Mt. Moran and the Snake River from Oxbow Bend, between taking scenic photos of the river I was keeping an eye out for moose, as this was prime moose habitat. Far across the river (close to 1/10th or more of a mile I estimated) I spied this fellow’s antler tips poking above the willow thicket, and patiently waited until he came out to take a drink. Despite the power of my 500mm lens, the best composition I could get was to take advantage of the brilliant fall foliage backlit by the morning sun rendering Mr. Moose in silhouette. Nikon D100 on tripod, Sigma f/4.5 500mm lens, ISO 400, exposure unrecorded but approximately 1/500th sec on Shutter Priority.
