On a trip to Yellowstone to photograph wildlife one September, my friend and I heard about a Grizzly sow and her cub that had been hanging near the roadside for quite some time. We quickly motored to the location to find the bear and cub seemingly unconcerned about the throng of photographers and park rangers watching the bears that were only 15-20 yards off the roadside. At one point the sow crossed the road leaving her cub alone, and one of the many shots I got was this one with the cub looking around to see where mama had gone. I love backlighting like this, with the rim light on the cub’s fur. Hand held Nikon D100, Nikkor f/4 300mm ED, ISO 400, exposure unrecorded but approximately 1/500th sec on Shutter Priority.
