2 New Cameras Debut Today: Sony A7R V & OM System OM-5

New camera lovers, today was your lucky day. Two major new mirrorless models made their debuts this morning. First, OM Digital Solutions, the company formerly known as Olympus, launched the 20MP OM-5. Then, just a few hours later, Sony introduced the 61MP Sony A7R V.

Here's what we know about the OM System OM-5, which will be available in late November 2022, and the Sony A7R V, which goes on sale in December 2022.

OM System OM-5

As mentioned previously, the OM-5 is the latest Micro Four Thirds-based mirrorless camera from the company formerly known as Olympus. And if you've shot with Olympus' models in the past, the OM-5 will look and feel familiar.

The OM-5 is, more or less, the successor to the E-M5 III, which was introduced by Olympus in 2019. Like that camera, the OM-5 is lightweight, compact, and durable. It's also, more or less, the step down model from the OM-1, which is the flagship OM System camera launched earlier this year.

The OM-5 weighs just under 13 ounces but has a tough dustproof and splashproof camera body with freeze protection down to 14°F. Other key features include up to 7.5 steps of image stabilization from the camera's in-body 5-axis image stabilizer.

The OM-5 is powered by the TruePix IX image processor and has several new computational photography features including 50MP Hand-Held Hi-Res Mode, Live ND, Pro Capture model, Focus Stacking, Live Composite, Starry Sky AF. For autofocus, the OM-5 uses 121-point all cross-type on-chip Phase Detection AF.

The OM-5 goes on sale in late November 2022 in silver or black in the following configurations and pricing:  OM System OM-5 Body Only: $1,199.99 (US); $1,699.99 (CAD); OM System OM-5 Body with 12-45mm F4.0 PRO Lens Kit: $1,599.99 (US); $2,199.99 (CAD).

Sony A7R V

The Sony A7R V uses the same 61MP full frame sensor as its predecessor but features a host of new Artificial Intelligence (AI) features. Most significantly the Sony A7R V has a new AI processing unit dedicated to AI-based image recognition, which is a first in Sony’s Alpha cameras. The new A7R V also adds Sony’s powerful Bionz XR image processor, which is new to the high resolution “R” full frame line.

The Sony A7R V also features a completely updated 5-axis In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) system that offers eight steps of shake reduction to help the camera produce sharper images. They’ve given the A7R V 8K movie recording as well and a new, flip-out and fold-back, 4-axis, multi-angle LCD screen on back of the camera to help compose low down or over-the-head shots.

The new Sony A7R is slated to go on sale in December 2022 for $3,900 USD and $5,300 CAD.
