Krystle Wright Braves the Perils and Chaos of Being a Professional Adventure Sports Photographer
Krystle Wright is a nomadic adventure photographer from Australia who travels the globe in a quest to capture dramatic images of expeditions and extreme sports. She recently sat down with our sister network GrindTV to discuss the dangers and rigors of a commitment to push herself beyond what might be considered sane.
When she’s not traveling abroad, Wright lives out of a Toyota 4Runner that’s jam-packed with mountaineering equipment, skis, and a variety of other adventure gear, explaining that she tends to get involved in every sport she photographs. During the past 10 years as a pro adventure shooter Wright has photographed BASE jumpers in Canada and paragliders in Pakistan. She’s also free-dived with whales in the Azores of Portugal.
Amidst her pursuits Wright has suffered a variety of accidents like the time she was knocked unconscious when her tandem paraglider slammed into boulders upon takeoff. Another time she fell into a crevasse on Baffin Island while unroped, and after being extricated slid over 140 feet down an icy snow slope before coming to a stop.
What does it take to capture images from Wright’s unique perspective? She says, “Whether hanging from precarious positions on remote cliff edges, swimming through jagged, unexplored canyons, or trudging for days through vicious, baleful weather, it’s about that final experience – capturing a fleeting moment.”
Wright’s work has been widely published and her bravery and tenacity have garnered her international acclaim as well as sponsorships and commercial assignments from companies like North Face and Patagonia.
You can find more of Wright’s compelling work on her website and in the video below from Canon Australia. And don’t miss our earlier story with dramatic photos from an adventure photographer in Alaska.
