Want to Make Tasty Landscape Photographs? Here’s the Recipe (VIDEO)

So what goes into making an epic landscape photograph? That’s a difficult, if not impossible, question to answer because the notion of artistic beauty is a very subjective matter. What we do know, however, is that you have to check a few boxes off your list before any image can be considered fantastic.

All compelling landscape images are carefully composed, properly exposed, and display a thoughtful approach to focus and depth of field. And you have to start with a beautiful scene. But there’s got to be more than that for an image to be considered truly great, right?

Today we turn to acclaimed Danish landscape photographer Mads Peter Iversen to get his recipe for making what he calls “world-class” landscape photos. So follow along, gather the proper ingredients, and see if you can cook up something tasty.

We usually find Iversen somewhere in Denmark, but in this behind-the-scenes episode he takes up the discussion while photographing a couple beautiful locations in Northern Germany. And you can find his choice of gear in the description beneath the video.

Iversen is best known for a minimalist approach to nature photography. He discusses the importance of originality, and how you can create a unique look of your own. As you’ll see, this process involves a clear vision with a consistent concept regarding composition.

Technical mastery is important too, and Iversen has some sound advice for landscape photographers regarding optimal camera settings and gear choices. Subjectivity also enters into the equation as he explains what he means by the ”X-factor” or “that special thing.”

The episode wraps up with Iversen reminding us that image editing is also a key factor, and he has some good advice for that too.

You can find more tips and tricks on Iversen’s YouTube channel, so be sure and take a look. And check out a video we posted from another pro, revealing what he says is the one lens every landscape photographer should own.
