Talking Pictures

I count this image among my best not because of the "aha" I felt as I dashed across a busy Tucson, Arizona, street before the sun could move another inch. It was only after I had several shots stowed safely in my Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II that I realized what I had actually found.

The first aha was seeing those nine "wanderers in the desert" from across the street. The second was discovering that those wanderers were just nine tar drip marks on the side of a concrete stairway. The building, an old YMCA renovated recently into artist lofts, had just been re-roofed, hence the dripping tar. But the left to right shadows couldn't have been formed that way. I could only surmise that one of the resident artists walking by had seen the drips and "brushed" in the shadows with a stick.
