Talking Pictures

During the summer of 2005, I attended a photography course in Prague in the Czech Republic. One Saturday we took a field trip to the town of Ceské Budejovice near the Czech border with Austria. There, one of my fellow photographers hurriedly summoned me to the scene of this moody photograph, which I have to come to call "Bike Boy." The boy played with sticks and stones at the edge of a backwater canal for a while. As he tired of the game, he walked away and I took this picture. Was the smashed bicycle his? I'll never know but it sure would have made for a better story if it was...
