Celebrate Veteran's Day with These Beautifully Colorized Photographs from the First World War

As Americans celebrate Veteran’s Day honoring those who served our country, and our friends in Canada do the same for what they call Remembrance Day, we thought we’d share some beautifully colorized images from the First World War.

These images are the result of a project of Canada’s Vimy Foundation, in collaboration with the Department of Canadian Heritage, intended to engage young Canadians with defining moments in their country’s history. As you can see from the images we shared, there are sliders on each photo for an interactive effect we were unable to duplicate here. When you visit the Vimy Foundation website you can drag the slider to see the entire image in color or as it was originally shot in black and white.

The First World War Education Project involved colorizing 150 images from a variety of sources, as well as video archives from the National Film Board of Canada. The images highlight important battles, as well as life on the home front and in the country’s wartime industries.

Images from the project will be part of a traveling exhibit hosted by museums and galleries across Canada, and will ultimately appear in a book published by Dundum Press.

The project was made possible thanks to support from the Canadian government, which provided over $400,000 to the Vimy Foundation. The Commemoration Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage also supplied support.

We encourage you to visit the interactive Vimy Foundation website to learn more about this photographic project and view additional images as you pay homage to our veterans.
