Leica turned back the clock (again) on its digital rangefinders today, announcing the M Edition 60 model that has no LCD screen on back, just a dial to adjust ISO. The limited edition camera (there will only be 600 made), which celebrates the 60th anniversary of Leica’s M series rangefinders, was unveiled by Dr. Andreas Kaufmann, Leica’s chairman, at a press conference at the photokina show in Germany this morning.

Phase One released Version 8 of its Capture One Pro at photokina this morning and the updated imaging software features a host of new tools designed to better process and edit Raw photo files. Phase One also said there’s a new subscription plan available for Capture One Pro 8 though, unlike the latest version of Adobe’s Photoshop, you can still buy the software outright.

Sony unveiled the new Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35mm F4 ZA OSS (SEL1635Z) lens for E-mount cameras at photokina today. The ZEISS 16-35mm F4 is Sony’s fifth full-frame zoom lens designed for its E-mount system, joining the Sony FE 28-70mm (model SEL2870), ZEISS 24-70mm F4 (model SEL2470Z), 70-200mm F4 G (model SEL70200G) and 28-135mm F4 G Power Zoom (model SELP28135G) lenses.

During a Canon event today before the start of the photokina show in Cologne, Germany tomorrow, we got some hands-on time with the long awaited Canon EOS 7D Mark II. Even though our time with the 7D II was brief — we were pretty much loaned the camera and allowed to shoot for a few minutes — we got a pretty good sense of how this APS-C-based digital SLR performs. In short, it’s feels like a mini machine gun.

Panasonic introduced the 12.8-megapixel DMC-LX100 compact camera with a Micro Four Thirds-sized sensor at photokina today. This pocket-friendly shooter features a newly developed, Leica-branded DC Vario-Summilux lens with a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 24-75mm, and an F/1.7-F/2.8 aperture range.

Canon unveiled a premium portable camera at photokina this morning: the 20MP PowerShot G7 X, which uses a large (for a compact model) 1-inch CMOS image sensor and features a multi-angle (up to 180°), flip-up, 3-inch touch capacitive, rear LCD panel with 1,040K dots of resolution.

Rumors about an alleged 7D Mark II digital SLR from Canon have been swirling for several years and now those rumors have come to fruition. At the photokina show in Cologne, Germany today, Canon finally took the wraps off the 20.2-megapixel Canon EOS 7D Mark II, the long awaited successor to the original 18MP 7D DSLR from 2009.

Samsung debuted a brand new flagship mirrorless, compact system camera at photokina this morning, the NX1 Smart Camera. The NX1 uses a Samsung-developed 28-megapixel BSI (Backside Illuminated), APS-C-sized, CMOS sensor, which the company says is the biggest BSI chip to date. (BSI chips are designed to produce cleaner images in low light.)

Olympus took the wraps off a new version of its OM-D E-M1 mirrorless, compact system camera at photokina this morning and this Micro Four Thirds-based model now features a new silver look and is loaded with updated firmware designed to help studio photographers. Olympus also debuted the new M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm f2.8 PRO lens at the show.

n lens development news, Tamron said it’s creating a new ultra wide-angle zoom lens for full-frame DSLRs with a fast F/2.8 aperture and VC (Vibration Compensation), which the company claims would be the world’s first in this category.

Nikon filled out its full-frame digital SLR line this morning in announcing the new D750, which uses a 24.3-megapixel FX-format sensor. Nikon also announced two new photo accessories this morning: the AF-S Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G ED lens and the SB-500 Speedlight flash. All three products will go on sale on September 25th.
