When people asked legendary editor Herbert Keppler why he sometimes wrote about cameras costing more than the average photographer could afford, he told me it was because of the Maserati factor. “Most people,” he said, “can’t afford a Maserati but like reading about them.” And I get that. No, we’re not cooking color slides and film negatives in a pop-up toaster like Eggo waffles. The FilmToaster is a device that enables you to create digital image files from virtually any size film or transparency up to 4x5. You supply the DSLR and macro lens. WD just launched what could be a very handy mobile storage solution for photographers on the go. OK, here’s something a bit different: A lens replica mug for coffee lovers that features a self-stirring mechanism and has a stainless steel interior to keep your drinks hot. It’s also great for icy, blended cocktails, but nobody would consume those while out shooting, would they?

Wireless camera remotes are fairly common these days but most offer only limited control over your DSLR or mirorrless camera. That changes with the new and sophisticated Pulse remote camera trigger from Alpine Labs, which combines pro features with an easy-to-use interface and a surprisingly low introductory price of $89.

While nothing beats practice and time spent in the field waiting for perfect light, there are a few essential tools that should be found in every landscape photographer’s bag. These photo accessories might not be as exciting as that new camera we all dream of, but they will help you take your photography to the next level much quicker than upping your megapixel count.

Here’s a little something for the photographer (or yourself) who has everything: A stylish flask that looks like a vintage camera. Available from Graham & Green, the Snapshot Camera Hip Flask is easily filled by unscrewing the “shutter release button” and holds 11 oz. of your favorite libation.

Many years ago, along with some fellow writers, I visited an Agfa—remember them?—facility in Brussels. During the tour one of the leaders asked, “What do you think of the idea of adding a phone to a digital camera?” We all laughed and thought it was the dumbest idea we’d ever heard. It turned out that he was asking the wrong question; it should have been, “What do you think of adding a camera to a phone?”

We all tend to stow our gear when the weather turns nasty, and that’s a real shame because that’s often when the most dramatic photo opportunities arise. Now you can ignore rain, dust, snow and salt spray and keep shooting, thanks to the versatile and affordable Altura Professional Rain Cover.
