Max:I never saw a car like that in my life! Prof. Fate: Yes, and you never will again, either. Give me the bomb!--The Great Race (1965)
Blake Edward's film The Great Race was based on a real motorsports event. The original "Great Race" took place in 1908 when automobiles from different...
“A Dream is where a boy can swim in the deepest oceans and fly over the highest clouds.”—Joanne K. Rowling
From time to time I like to use this space to introduce you to computing trends that affect digital imaging. This month Web Profiles is brought to you from the clouds. Cloud computing refers to computing resources that are accessed and usually owned and operated by...
Back when I was a wee lad, I got my introduction to professional photography by shooting weddings. I remember one of my first when the bride’s uncle introduced himself while carrying a brand-new Hasselblad loaded with more accessories than a new Cadillac. He looked at my used and battered Mamiya C33 and just smiled. Can you imagine shooting weddings with a Holga? Well kiddies, that’s...
“I never think of the future—it comes soon enough.”—Albert Einstein
What lies ahead this year in photography? Even Hogwarts’ Professor Sybill Patricia Trelawney would have to admit that the noble art of divination isn’t 100 percent perfect, so what chance do I have with a rusty crystal ball, or maybe it’s just an old ball bearing? During 2010 the...
“Good authors, too, who once knew better words, Now only use four-letter words writing prose, Anything goes.”—Cole Porter
I had been expecting this for some time and recently received an e-mail informing me that within a few days Comcast, my broadband Internet supplier, would place a limit on my monthly downloads, stating that “usage of more than 250 Gigabytes (GB)...
National Photography Month started in 1984 as the week-long American Photography Celebration but now runs the entire month. May was also the home of “Take Your Camera to Work Day” that was funded out of my own pocket but faded after a few years because of the cost of creating a user-friendly site. If anybody’s interested in helping relaunch the website I could restart it next year, depending on whether the Mayans were wrong or not. May is also my birthday month and I’d like to thank all of Shutterbug’s readers for their support over the years.
“Inner space is so much more interesting, because outer space is so empty.”—Theodore Sturgeon
In a variation of that famous computer game “Where in the World is Joe Farace,” my dream of looking out the window and seeing saguaros instead of snow banks was recently shattered by events beyond my control. So where am I as you read this today? I’m hoping...

The movie set photographer is one of the unsung heroes of a motion picture camera team. It’s the still photographer’s job to capture on-set images that document the production that will later be used to promote the film. Lest you think...
