In this day and age of cross-type AF sensors and AF tracking in high-speed shooting modes, a rangefinder-focusing camera might well seem an anomaly, if not a downright anachronism. Indeed, manual focusing has in large part become vestigial among photographers and their ability to focus without AF has atrophied.

A small earthquake didn’t stop Sony from unveiling two new wide-angle zooms in their ever-expanding line of full-frame E-mount lenses at a press event today in beautiful Santa Barbara, California. Shutterbug was on hand to test out the new Sony glass, which includes a fast FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM wide-angle zoom and an FE 12-24mm f/4 G ultra-wide zoom.

I recently had the chance to take the new Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II along with my regular full-frame Nikon system to Alaska and the Yukon on an outdoor shoot. Rather than test charts and pixel peeping, I focused on the real-world usability of Olympus’ new flagship mirrorless camera and its ability to get the job done as compared with a large and heavy DSLR system.

The Sony A6500 is the flagship model for Sony’s APS-C sensor-based mirrorless camera line and features an E-lens mount. The Sony A6500 was brought out only 8 months after the forerunner A6300 was shipped, which begs the question as to what changes and differences would justify a new model so soon. Indeed, there are some changes.

The sd Quattro H is Sigma’s second mirrorless camera based on a Foveon sensor that uses lenses with an SA mount. Compared to the first sd Quattro, which was introduced in summer 2016, the new camera offers a larger sensor, a more rugged yet still compact DSLR-style camera build, and a host of new features.

Sony got in the game this morning by unveiling the super speedy Sony A9 full frame mirrorless camera, which is designed for sports and action photography. The A9 features what Sony is calling the “world’s first” full-frame stacked CMOS sensor with 24.2MP of resolution, and it has the ability to shoot “blackout-free” bursts of images at up to 20 frames per second (fps) for up to 241 Raw or 362 JPEG images.

This morning Sony announced it has overtaken Nikon in the U.S. market for full-frame interchangeable lens cameras, one spot behind industry leader Canon. Sony leapfrogged Nikon because of the company’s 23% growth in this category with record sales in both interchangeable-lens cameras and lenses in 2017.

The Fujifilm X-T2 is a compact but serious mirrorless camera you can bring anywhere. It hovers between the enthusiast and pro product categories with a feature set and performance levels previously only available in DSLRs. Or in other words, the photographic power that 12 pounds of gear used to deliver is now offered in a camera less than half the weight with all the image quality. Highlights of the Fujifilm X-T2 include an APS-C-sized 24.3-megapixel X-Trans CMOS III sensor with no low-pass filter, and the ability to shoot 4K video.
