Canon Gets Into the Photo Album Business with New hdAlbum Book Printing Service

With products like the recently announced Connect Station CS100 network storage device, Canon has been trying to show photographers it does more than just make cameras, lenses, and printers. Now the company has added another imaging wrinkle to its product portfolio: Canon-produced photo albums.

Called hdAlbum, the new service from Canon allows photographers to create snazzy, customizable photo albums. The albums are printed on the DreamLabo 5000, Canon's inkjet production photo printer.

To create the albums, photographers need to download the free hdAlbum creation software and lay out each photo using the auto-arrange feature or custom-design option. The pages are then printed on the DreamLabo 5000, which uses Canon FINE high-density printhead technology. The DreamLabo 500 prints with seven dye-based inks (at up to 2400 dots per inch) to produce a wide spectrum of colors, sharp details and photo-realistic production.

Canon's hdAlbum service is slowly being rolled out to its retail partners. Unique Photo in New Jersey is the first retailer to offer hdAlbums to its customers.

There are five album sizes available: portrait (8x11”), landscape (11x8”) and square (8x 8”, 10x10”, and 12x12”). Paper selections include Premium Canon Luster or Glossy inkjet media. All albums utilize a post printing hinge-style binding process and can include up to 100 pages. To enable full customization, users have a  selection of backgrounds, layouts and templates to make an album.
