The 12.3-Megapixel Camera in the New Google "Pixel" Smartphone May Be the Best Ever

Google has unveiled their next-generation smartphone, the Google “Pixel,” and early test results indicate the camera on this sophisticated new wonder may be the best smartphone camera ever. According to a comprehensive review by DXOMark Mobile, the Pixel earned a score of 89—three points higher than highly acclaimed Apple iPhone 7 Plus, and the highest DXO rating ever given to a smartphone. The lens in the Pixel features a fast, f/2 maximum aperture for optimum low-light results, and offers a host of creative options including HDR, panorama and fisheye modes. There’s also built-in lens blur for making key subjects stand out from the background. The device boasts a vivid AMOLED cinematic display with true blacks and 16.77 million colors. Other enhancements include a high-capacity battery Google says will last all day and can be recharged to seven hours of life in just 15 minutes.

The Pixel is also designed to work with Google’s new Daydream View VR headset and controller.Despite the Pixel’s myriad of features and its high DXO rating, it’s important to keep in mind that this is still a smartphone with a very small sensor—even compared to the latest pocketable digital cameras that boast a broad array of manual features including great low-light capability, focal range versatility, and a variety of flash and metering modes. So don’t think about trading in your DSLR or mirrorless camera just yet.

Available in two sizes (5” or 5.5”) and three colors (black, silver or blue), the Pixel features a seamless glass/aluminum body with easy-to-grip curved edges. You can pre-order the Pixel now and read more about it’s myriad of features on the Google website. The video below will also provide some insight.
