Harold Davis came to iPhone photography about seven years ago by the usual route: “I’d been hearing about it,” he says, “and I needed a phone. I got the phone, and then it was, Okay, now let’s see what the camera can do.” What’s happened after that may or may not be considered usual.

It’s entirely possible that this particular light display happens frequently in a particular Mission Viejo, California, house. It’s also very likely it attracts no attention. But on a certain April day in 2016, G. Dan Mitchell was in the house, and that made all the difference.

Spend even a short time looking at Jackie Tran’s spectacular landscape and cityscape photos and it won’t come as a surprise to learn he’s a graphic designer as well as a photographer. His years of design experience are apparent in the way his compositions use lines, shapes, and colors to draw viewers into and around his images.
