In 1868 the first train traversed the Sierra Nevada Range through 15 tunnels totaling 1659 feet. Over 15 months of digging, hand drilling, and blasting through granite rock, by mostly Chinese workers, allowed trains to safely cross Donner Summit on the Oakland-Ogden line. The last train passed through these tunnels in 1993.
