This photo was taken at a deserted whaling station on Deception Island, in the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica. The decaying boat may have been left on the beach since the 1960s when the station was abandoned. Although the photo is in color, the white snow, black volcanic sand, and bleached wood give the overall image a monochromatic tone. The object on the ground off the port bow looks like a Southern hemisphere Skua. A Nikon D7000 and a Nikkor 16-85 mm VR lens at 30 mm were used. The exposure was f/8 and 1/400 sec.
