A family friend gave me a pit pass to the Fontana race. I had some practice a few weeks earlier at another race and was starting to feel a bit more comfortable with the speed and the heat. Being so close at ground level provides a great view, but the speed seems to be accelerated and the sun beating down on the cement really holds the heat. The accident happened so fast I almost didn't see it. I had just shot a pack of cars racing by and was scanning back to the top of the turn when the #7 car seemed to grab the turf and spun out, with parts of the car breaking away! I shot it with a Canon 70D and Canon 75-300mm zoomed to 120mm, ISO 100, f9.0 at 1/320 sec.
