Nikon Investigating Lens Flare Banding Problem on D750 DSLR

Nikon says it’s investigating a problem reported by users of its D750 DSLR where a dark shadowy band will appear in images with lens flare. (Shutterbug reported on the lens flare banding issue last week.)

In response to complaints from D750 users, Nikon USA has posted a statement on its website saying it is “already working on measures to address this issue.” The statement reads, in part, as follows:

“We have received indications from some users that when photographing scenes in which an extremely bright light source, such as the sun or high-intensity lighting, is at a certain position along the top border of the frame, flare with an unnatural shape caused by the reflection of the light may sometimes occur in images captured with the D750 digital SLR camera.

As we at Nikon are constantly striving to ensure the satisfaction of our customers, we have released this announcement to inform users that we are already working on measures to address this issue and will, of course, keep you advised of these as they occur.”

At least one D750 owner is happy with Nikon’s response, so far. A photographer who goes by the handle “Blue Planet” on YouTube and posted a video (embedded below) demonstrating the issue, said he thinks a solution is not far away.

“There will be a fix soon, and thats what all I need,” he wrote below his video. “Soon the problem will not exist.”

Shutterbug reviewed the Nikon D750 last month and quite liked it. We experienced no problems similar to the lens flare banding that some D750 are now complaining about.
