BEGINNERS Guide to Landscape Photography: 9 Easy Tips (VIDEO)

If you’re just getting started in landscape photography, or you typically shoot something else, it’s important to learn the basics for capturing impressive images the next time you venture into the great outdoors—whether that’s on vacation, while hiking, or visiting a local park or nature center.

In the beginners guide below you’ll learn how to maximize the skills you already have, add a few new ones, and improve the technical and artistic value of your images during your next nature photography shoot.

Romanian pro Toma Bonciu is one of our go-to instructors when it comers to travel and landscape photography tutorials that are easy to master. In this episode he provides nine simple tips for making batter landscape images. And you can take advantage of his advice for cityscapes, environmental portraits, and many other forms of outdoor photography.

As Bonciu explains, landscape photography is a lot more challenging than it appears, even if you discover a beautiful scene and have the proper gear in your bag. There are weather concerns; ever-changing light, and complicated scenes that often make it difficult to arrive at a compelling composition.

Landscape scenes often include a wide range of tones from shadows to highlights, further complicating the task of arriving at a correct exposure. Bonciu divides his tips into two broad categories; those involving technical matters, and other of a more artistic nature.

The first tip is one you’ve likely heard before, but it’s worth repeating: get out there early to take advantage of beautiful morning light. Bonciu also discusses the importance of knowing your gear, especially when shooting in low light, so you're not fumbling around looking for camera buttons and menu settings as conditions continue to change. The same is true for your tripod, filters, and other important accessories.

Bonciu introduces his third tip like this: “Your images must be sharp and clear” if you want great results. Here he covers important techniques that are essential for getting the job done. There are several more tips to learn, so pay close attention and start upping your game today.

There’s much more to learn on Bonciu’s YouTube channel, so be sure and pay a visit.
