This is the 2012 transition on Venus as it passed across the face of the sun, with a little cloud cover moving in. Shot afocal with a Sony Cybershot DSC-S650 connected to a Meade 60mm refracter telescope and a Celestron afocal camera adapter. f/3.9, 12mm, ISO-125, 1/30 sec. (No Flash).
Usually I shoot with a Nikon D5100 and a range of lenses but I also have a couple of small pocket point and shoots I use randomly. (I always have one in my pocket). My Sony Cybershot was perfect for connecting to the eyepiece of my Meade 60mm telescope with an afocal camera adapter (Which I also use with my lab microscope for photomicrography) I made a homemade solar filter for the telescope out of aluminum mylar and cardboard.
The day in Oregon was extremely cloudy but I waited patiently as I watched a small gap in the clouds inch its way closer to the sun and at just the right moment a gap opened up and I snapped away....which only lasted about 30 seconds before it was covered again. The transition of Venus only happens about every 127 years.
I love the dual silhouettes from both Venus itself against the sun and then the cloud silhouette passing in front of both. Also this photo just goes to show that you don't always need expensive gear to create a great photo....even if I am a little biased.
