It’s 2016 and some Nikon D750 DSLRs are still experiencing problems. Nikon has issued yet another service advisory for the semi-pro, full frame DSLR this week, noting that a shutter shading problem that cropped up in July 2015 is now affecting more models.

Drones and wild animals don’t always mix and with good reason. Animals often see the noisy, swirling drones as aggressive predators and respond in kind, occasionally knocking the flying whirligigs out of the air.

Here are some tips I discovered when researching this month’s column. One was from my wife who uses this technique all the time—smile! And you know what, people smile back, making you appear friendly and non-threatening. The other was from Michael Archambault, who suggests you “acknowledge that street photography is not perfect.” Or as my grandfather once told me, “If you spend your whole life looking for happiness, it’ll make you miserable.”

At least according to the above photograph (supplied by Canon USA, of course) and some anecdotes we heard from photographers who shot the big game, Canon’s lenses appeared to still dominate the sidelines at this past Sunday’s Super Bowl.

The new Canon EOS-1D X Mark II was unveiled last night and as with many pro digital SLRs aimed at sports photographers and photojournalists, the new camera has impressive speed. In particular, it can fire off bursts of images at 14 frames per second with auto exposure (AE) and predictive autofocus (AF) through the viewfinder, and 16fps with the mirror locked. (The previous model offered 12fps and 14fps burst speeds, respectively.)

Phew, what a busy month it’s been for new photo gear! While the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas has not, traditionally, been a major event to debut high-end photography equipment, CES 2016 was definitely an exception with dozens of interesting imaging releases. (And hopefully this is a trend that continues at future CES events, which, in recent years have been rather ho-hum for photography gear.)

Canon held its once-every-five-years Canon Expo 2015 show in New York City last September where the Tokyo-based company pulled back the curtain on some potentially groundbreaking imaging technology. Part science lab and part marketing showcase, the event drew tens of thousands of buyers, dealers, and distributors of Canon products (along with a large group of journalists) eager to see what the company had up its sleeve.

Less than a month after Acme marketed what they unofficially considered their finest camera ever, I was having lunch with a particularly accomplished professional photographer. “I just got the camera,” he said. “I love it! It’s amazing! I can’t wait to see what Acme’ll do next!”

The big CES show in Las Vegas wrapped up over the weekend but there are still a few tidbits of photo gear news trickling out of the event. The biggest CES headlines for photographers were several interesting product announcements from Nikon including the unveiling of the full frame Nikon D5 pro DSLR and the APS-C sensor-based Nikon D500 and photo enthusiasts.

The Nikon D5 professional DSLR has been the clear star (in cameras) of this year’s CES 2016 show in Las Vegas. Indeed, there’s a lot that’s appealling about this flagship, full frame DSLR from Nikon, including its ability to shoot at up to ISO 3,280,000 to capture images in extreme low light conditions.
