Man oh man do I have a story behind this....
Working with a publication I had seen a photographer post a shot of Abiqua Falls here in Oregon. It was saturated with marvelous colors, textures and lighting and I told myself I had to go to get a glimpse of this beauty myself.
One day my wife and I decided we would make the trip, about one hour outside of our hometown in Vancouver. Little did I know how ill prepared I was for the adventure.
Bundled in my Nike sweats and some sneakers we found that the road down was just a bit to rough for my little ole Subaru. Instead of high centering somewhere down trail I decided it would be better if we just parked and finished the 3.5 mile hike. Bad decision # 1.
About a mile down the hike it started to get pretty rainy and muddy, and unbeknownst to me we took the wrong trail off and tried to hike down what appeared to be the correct trail. It was not, after slipping and skidding down a cliff side with nothing but mud caked climbing rope we were led to a seemingly peaceful yet disappointing stream. This was bad decision # 2.
Once we got back up to the man road after 20 minutes of mud caked climbing we ventured down the remaining few miles to actual trail. This was much more friendly to the unprepared hiker. Still some climbing but nothing like the trail to that peaceful stream. After scaling some rocks and dodging a few trees the huge rock walls opened to the magnificent sight of the waterfall. This made all the bad decisions prior worth it.
My word of advise for Abiqua Falls... Bring a car with clearance you can drive to the trail, learn from my mistakes, and enjoy the amazing sight.
