Two bull elks battle during the fall rut season. I came across these two at dusk just outside Jasper Township in Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada. They were battling over a female who stood watching them – for a while. It was quite a battle for quite a few minutes with a clear victor in the end. Unfortunately the female was not around to see it as she had left during the battle with another male who came by unseen by the combatants.

I used a handheld Canon EOS 50D camera with an EF100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Canon lens. Settings were 1/45 second at f/5.6, ISO2000 and 400mm
