There’s no through-road around the north of Martinique. Instead there’s a beautiful 14km trail that winds its way through jungle, up and down hills, around the coastline offering occasional views of Mt Pelee above, the sea below, and of course lots of tropical vegetation. I started early from Grand Riviere for my solo hike and finished at Anse Couleuvre - a stunning black sand beach, where the road on the western side of the island ends. After an afternoon enjoying the beach, a local boat I’d arranged turned up to take me back to Grand Riviere, a whizz of a ride passing sea cliffs around the coast.
It was while walking the trail I came across this curious little green lizard sat on a exotic red plant. I was alone, so stayed quiet and it sat still quite some time, enabling me to get several different shots. I've cropped this image slightly.
