Look closely and you’ll see the image of a 3-masted ship in the distance. The optical properties of different atmospheric temperature levels caused the image to appear upright (unlike a simple reflection) and above the horizon - - when, in fact, the ship was below the horizon. This complex form of mirage is called a Fata Morgana; it is a rare illusion that appears as a narrow band that floats just above the horizon. My photo was taken just before sunrise in the Indian Ocean with a Nikon D200 and a Nikkor 18-200 mm VR lens at 200 mm. The exposure was f/5.6 and 1/2500 sec (ISO 1600).
