Downtown Sarajevo is nothing like the image of the Balkans that nightly news programs beamed into our collective psyche in the 90's. It's cosmopolitan, friendly, commercial and busy. But take a short walk outside the nucleus of the city and you'll find facades like this one, still standing, but clearly showing the signs of conflict. Life moves on around these structures, and the contrast is striking.
