I found this guy in one of my ponds, sunning himself on a lily pad, waiting for a fish or frog to swim by. This is a Northern Watersnake, Nerodia sipedon. I worked with him for a bit over an hour and a half: He wanted to escape, and I wanted a decent photo.
Finally, he curled up near the bloom of this blue water lily and I was able to get the kind of shot I wanted, with his tongue out, sniffing me and the flower. Canon 5DSR, Canon 200-400 zoom lens with 1.4 extender, 1/500th to freeze his tongue, f/11, ISO 640. Processed in Adobe Lightroom CC to enhance exposure, contrast, and white balance.
