This is the "steel skeleton" of the Boca Grande Rear Range (Gasparilla Island) light in Florida. Originally commissioned in 1881 outside of Lewes, Delaware, it was eventually taken out of service and transported - piece-by-piece - to Gasparilla Island in the early 1920's. After careful reassembly and a fresh coat of paint, it was rebuilt in 1927 to serve as a guide through the Boca Grande Navigational Channel and in to the safety of Charlotte Harbor.
Despite some obvious neglect over the past few decades, the light was recently acquired by the Barrier Islands Park Society, which has been working tirelessly to restore it to its 1927 splendor.
