I was pretty bummed about the time I saw this Northern Shoveler. The bird refuge seemed quite empty of birds as I drove slowly down the dirt road. My heart took a leap when I saw this beautifully colored young Shoveler. He must have known of my discouragement because he just swam back and forth for me while I photographed him. I used a Nikon D850 with a Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6 lens handheld. Settings were continuous focus and shutter, 1/1000 sec., f/5.6, 500mm, ISO was 640.
