My wife's mother had a stroke and had fallen at home. The stroke caused her Alzheimer's to advance and after rehab she spent a brief stay with us. After locating a nursing home to take her, she was admitted and the family would stop in regularly to visit her, but with her age and with Alzheimer's deleting her memory, she barely knew who any of her family were. On this particular evening, we walked in and as soon as her mother spotted my wife, she called her by name. I sat down next to them and started snapping photos. They spoke for a few moments and then, upon hearing the camera taking the photos, her mother looked and me, stared, then looked back at her daughter, only to ask who she was. The color version of this photo won the Nikon 2023-2024 Excellence Award for single photo.
