I was shooting this surfing action from above the water on the Huntington Beach pier. It's often not easy to get a good shooting position because there are many photographers vying for a good spot close to the action. Long telephotos are generally required, at least 400 mm on the long end. Lots of shots using burst mode will increase your chances of getting a good shot. At this point in the maneuver the surfer looks like he is travelling horizontally along the top of the wave. This is just the apex of a turn and he was heading down the wave in the next shot.
