Reflection Pond near the end of the park road in Denali National Park is a favorite place for photographers to try to catch the reflection of Mount Denali and the Alaska Range. However, as a long-time park shuttle bus driver told me, photographers can spend years trying to get a good photo of the reflected mountains at this pond. Only 30% of park visitors see Mount Denali because the mountain is often shrouded in clouds. Wind also ripples the surface of Reflection Pond, spoiling the reflection. In order to view the sunrise or sunset at this pond, you also have to stay at a fairly remote lodge or Wonder Lake Campground.
When I visited the park in 2016, the park experienced a week of amazingly clear weather. After a month of cloudy weather, even the park staff were out taking pictures. During the week, I stayed three days at Wonder Lake Campground, and one morning when the wind was calm I took the first shuttle bus from the campground to Reflection Pond. I arrived soon after sunrise to find the pond mirror smooth. I took a long series of photos at the water's edge as the sun rose. This was my favorite image from a morning of reflected grandeur.
