This is a true “grab shot” because when the Grey Whale sidled up to our boat, I swung my camera around and clicked off a shot without checking any of the settings. The camera was a Nikon D7000 with a Nikkor 16-85 mm VR lens. I later saw that the lens was set to 40 mm, the mode dial had been accidentally turned to Manual, and the exposure was f/11 and 1/8000 sec. The original photo, taken in San Ignacio Lagoon, Baja California, Mexico, was like that of the proverbial “black cat in a coal mine at midnight”. The image was rescued with a lot of help from Photoshop and several plugins.
