Post boxes in the United Kingdom are not the most photogenic subjects, but this one is special: Since the 19th century, the post boxes have been embellished with the monogram (“royal cypher”) of the king or queen reigning at the time of installation. Look closely and you will see that this one shows the monogram of Edward VIII. Edward wasn’t king for very long. (He abdicated the throne after about 11 months in 1936 to marry his twice-divorced American girlfriend.) Of the more than 100,000 post boxes in the UK, fewer than 200 carry his monogram. The photo was taken in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, Scotland, with a Nikon D70 camera and a Nikkor 18-70 mm lens at 29 mm. The exposure was f/8 and 1/80 sec.
