We were eating breakfast at a camp in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia, when we received a message that a ”golden” lion had been spotted a few miles away. We grabbed our cameras, and sped toward the site. The above photo was taken from a safari vehicle at a distance of about 35 feet with a Nikon D600 and a Nikkor 80-400 mm VR lens at 400 mm. The exposure (hand held) was f/8 and 1/200 sec (ISO 800). This color variant -- also called “blonde” -- is not an albino although he has a pink nose and gums instead of the usual black coloration of male lions. Other lions that we saw in the area were normally colored.
