A Southern Giant Petrel flying past an iceberg certainly looks like a “Winter Wonder” scene, and, in fact, the photo was taken in January, 2013. However, the image was captured off South Georgia Island (visible behind the iceberg) in the South Atlantic Ocean where January is summertime. The photo was taken with a Nikon D7000 and a Nikkor 70-300 mm VR lens at 70 mm. The exposure (hand-held from the deck of a ship) was f/8 and 1/4000 sec (ISO 200). Adjustments of color, tone, contrast, etc., were made using Photoshop. Nik Color Efex Pro 4 (Detail Extractor) was used to bring out the texture of the ice. Photographed by Irwin H.
